Gelatine is universal

Gelatine develops its healthy and stabilising effect not just in the food, pharmaceuticals and photographic industries. Many industry sectors benefit from the positive properties of this natural product. The examples cited are a selection from the broad spectrum of gelatine applications.

  • Gelatine also enhances our drinking pleasure. Glass clear Wines, juices, cider and, in some countries, beer, gelatine makes it possible. Gelatine reacts with the tannins and bitter substances and absorbs cloudy elements that then sink to the bottom and can be separated from the drink during the manufacturing process.
  • Specially selected gelatines are widely used as foliar fertilizers. Thanks to the slow depletion of amino acids, the nitrogen is precisely dosed. Gelatine thus has a positive influence on the metabolism of plants.
  • In the manufacture of matches, the binding properties of gelatine are indispensable for the match heads.
  • Gelatine is also used in the paper industry. Here, it improves resistance to moisture and the stiffness of the paper. Books can also be restored with gelatine.
  • Zinc and cadmium can be cleaned with the addition of gelatine in electrolytic baths. Gelatine creates the basis for the production of metals of high purity.
  • In the restoration of buildings – for example the Semper Opera House in Dresden, one of the most beautiful music theatres in Europe, or the Pont Alexandre III, the largest bridge in Paris – gelatine is being used as an elastic adhesive.
  • Building Renovation without Endangering Health: If asbestos is handled incorrectly the contamination of the air breathed in can rise to several million carcinogenic fibres per cubic meter of air. When buildings contaminated by asbestos are being renovated, the contaminated parts are sprayed with a gelatine solution. This creates an elastic network, binding the fibres. Thus the asbestos fibres are not released when removed. The advantage of using gelatine as a binding agent is that the bound asbestos mixture can be mixed with cement in a subsequent process. So hard is the resultant block that the asbestos fibres remain permanently bound and can be properly disposed of.
