On the trail of the potato... The potato originated in the formidable mountain range of South America, the Andes. Some 500 years ago Spanish seafarers brought the first potatoes back to Europe. The large tubers attracted a great amount of curiosity and interest. After all these brown "curiosities" were completely unknown, and their significance as a foodstuff was only discovered 100 years later.
