  • Nuts are best bought in their natural "packaging", in the shell where possible therefore. They remain fresh for the longest time if stored in a cool and well-ventilated place. Nut kernels keep best stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator as otherwise the high oil content means that the nuts soon become rancid.
  • The taste of nuts can be enhanced if the kernels are briefly roasted in the oven or a pan before eating.
  • If the nut kernels are discoloured, dry or mouldy, they are no longer edible and should be discarded.
  • Before baking or grinding the skin should be removed from the nut kernels. In order to remove the skin easily, the nuts should, depending on the variety, be scalded with hot water or roasted in the oven.
