The delicious taste of nuts often masks a considerable number of calories. Their high fat content (depending on the variety ca. 50 – 60 %) has given nuts a reputation for being calorie bombs. These fats are usually the all-important mono and poly-saturated fatty acids, however, which have a positive impact on the cholesterol level in the human body.
This favourable fatty acid composition is often combined with a high protein content, as well as appreciable amounts of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Depending on the variety of nut these are vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. These qualities make nuts a valuable part of a healthy diet.
