Hazelnut With this fruit of the hazelnut bush we differentiate between the longish shapes, e.g. Lambert nut, and the round Zeller nut. The main growing areas are in the Mediterranean countries, Turkey and the USA. Hazelnuts are offered in their shell, as whole shelled nuts, and in a chopped or ground form. Fresh hazelnuts have a white kernel and a solid consistency.
Peanut In botanic terms this is not a nut but a legume. The peanut derives its name from its extremely unusual plant. The pedicels, the flower stalks, do not grow upwards but grow into the ground, where the fruits develop into nuts ca. 5 cm below the surface. A characteristic feature of the peanut is its reddish skin, which is easily removed. Above all it is popular as a snack, on its own or salted, and also in sauces.
Walnut In botanic terms the walnut is not a true nut either, but a drupe. The walnut tree ranks among the oldest known of all trees. Its main growing areas are the Mediterranean countries, California and Chile. The edible kernel of the walnut is enclosed by two protective shells: the tough brown shell, and a green mantle, which breaks open when the plant ripens and which is removed after harvesting. After the fleshy green outer skin has been removed the walnuts are washed and then dried.
