Who doesn’t like to sweeten a long winter’s evening with a piece of chocolate? Yet this melt-in-the-mouth delicacy not only has a positive effect on the taste buds. Chocolate promotes the secretion of the “happiness” hormone serotonin in the brain and can help us to overcome a period when we are feeling low.
Chocolate also contains ingredients that are of interest in terms of health. Its natural tanning agents (polyphenols) not only lend dark chocolate a pleasantly bitter taste but also intercept free radicals in the body. The latter are, among other things, partly responsible for heart attacks and cancers.
Despite all these positive attributes and its seductive taste, there is one very good reason not to become totally addicted to chocolate. A bar of chocolate contains ca. 550 kilocalories and about 40 g of fat. The same amount of bread provides less than half the amount of kilocalories. But who wants to live on bread and water alone? The wide range of chocolate variations offers the palate the promise of an exciting experience full of melt-in-the mouth pleasure. And so that the happy mood from enjoying chocolate does not evaporate when we take a glance at the bathrooms scales, as with all sweet things – you can enjoy them with a clear conscience if you eat them in moderation!
