Vinegar is principally appreciated for its seasoning properties and thus for the pleasure it provides. It is also said to have a positive effect on health, however. Its acids encourage the flow of saliva, and thus have a positive impact on digestion and the metabolism. Fruit vinegar is used to treat a number of ailments. Linen cloths soaked in vinegar are a popular household remedy for the treatments of sprains. Cider vinegar is reputed to ease a number of ailments such as high blood fat levels, asthma and athlete's foot if taken internally or externally. These applications are based to a great extent on personal experience, however, and there is no scientific basis for their efficacy.
