In addition to the Mediterranean Basin, the small, evergreen citrus fruit trees and shrubs are mainly cultivated in California, Florida and Brazil. They are usually grown on plantations that are divided into three sections: one third for newly planted trees, one third for trees bearing optimal yields and the last third for old trees or fallow land. In general the local climate determines which species and varieties are cultivated. Slopes with southern exposure are recommended because they offer the best protection from frost and wind. Citrus fruits grown in the house or garden should also not be exposed to frost. They prefer sunny, wind-protected sites. They should also never be allowed to dry out. The optimal temperature for wintering over citrus trees is eight to twelve degrees.
