Whereas olive oil was previously used in many areas of daily life, as heating oil and in lamps for instance, nowadays it is predominantly used in cooking. Above all it would be impossible to imagine Mediterranean cuisine without olive oil. This should come as no surprise, after all 80% of the world's olive groves are to be found in the Mediterranean region. Thanks to the abundance of different growing areas and olive varieties, there is also an enormous variety of differing aromas and flavours. No other edible oil offers such a variety of aromas. Undoubtedly one of the reasons why olive oil is also so popular in northern Europe.
