Whether it's a berry or an aggregate fruit – it is still the strawberry season! In the more southerly countries of Europe this red fruit is available practically all year round, whereas in central Europe the season begins in mid-May and ends at the beginning of September. Among the most important months for harvesting strawberries are the sunny months of June and July.

Europe is home to the tiny woodland strawberry, which is known amongst botanists under the name Fragaria vesca. This fruit was gathered as long ago as the Stone Age. Its cultivation was first mentioned in France in the 14th century, and then in England in the 15th century.

Around the year 1750 the variety which is regarded as the source of the modern strawberry was created in Amsterdam. Its existence is due to the chance pollination of a Chilean strawberry (the Frenchman Amédée-François Frézier brought these large strawberries back to Europe from South America in 1712) with a Virginia strawberry (this variety of strawberry was brought to Europe from America by French emigrants). The newly-created fruit was given the name pineapple-strawberry because of its appearance and fragrance.

Spain is regarded as the most important producer of strawberries in Europe. In 2003 Spain had an area of 8,100 hectares devoted to the cultivation of strawberries. Italy took second place with 4,100 hectares under cultivation, followed by France with 3,700 hectares.
