Small Berries, Big Impact
Humankind has been gathering wild strawberries since the Stone Age. The garden strawberry with its large fruit, however, came about more by accident through the hybridisation of two species. Since strawberries are very delicate, they are best eaten or further processed immediately after harvesting. If this is not possible, they will keep, covered, in the refrigerator for up to two days, in the deep freeze for up to about ten months. With their high percentage of secondary plant substances, strawberries are known to prevent cardiovascular diseases and have an anti-inflammatory effect. They also contain more vitamin C than oranges or lemons. The percentage within ripe fruit can even be up to 20 percent higher than in fruit that is not optimally ripe. However, the red fruit is not only packed full of nutrients – despite its sweetness it is also very low in calories!
Strawberry Cream Cheese Cake
Sitting in the sun, enjoying a cup of coffee with a slice of strawberry torte – strawberry cakes are especially popular during the summer months. The strawberry’s Latin name Fragaria vesca quite fittingly describes it as the “edible fragrance”. Its sweet fruit mixed with cream cheese transform this cake into a summer delight.
