All the major European gelatine manufacturers are members of GME, representing some 45 per cent of global gelatine production. The GME was founded in 1974. As an interface between its members and the decisionmakers in European politics it has its headquarters in Brussels.
In its working committees the GME consistently pursues its main task, namely that of ensuring the consistently high quality of gelatine for customers and consumers. Conducting research and further developing technical standards, generating impetus for new legal framework conditions for the gelatine industry, and creating transparency are at the heart of its activities.
A key instrument for compliance with uniform quality standards is the Gelatine Mono-graph specially developed by the GME. This lays down up-to-date analytical methods for all the members. The Monograph is constantly being developed.
In order to ensure uniform international gelatine standards, the GME also cooperates closely with international institutions, such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation. The health of consumers in food retailing throughout the world is to be protected by the FAO's Codex Alimentarius. The GME has proposed extending the small number of quality criteria for gelatine that have been defined to date. The GME is thus making an important contribution to ensuring the quality of gelatine across the world.
