Expert Tips for the Right Start to Winter

Brussels, October 2002. We all notice it: when we look out of the window, when we go on our Sunday walk or simply when we are not so keen to do things as we had been a few months earlier. The cold season has crept up on us quicker than we would like. And we need to be careful: colds, flu infections and other illnesses are on the increase. For example, studies show that people who dislike exercise are more than twice as susceptible to illness, whether colds or heart disease, as those who are “only” slightly active. Enough exercise, a balanced diet and the right intake of vitamins are important, especially in winter.

Expert tip No. 1:
Start with sport, even in winter: forget the cold air and the dull day and do some exercise. In moderation. Two to three times a week for at least half an hour - jogging, cycling or swimming. The endurance training works like a boost to the immune system from inside and strengthens the body. Studies show that regular exercise even reduces the risk of cancer and pulmonary disease.

Expert tip No. 2:
Cold sores are more common among many people in the winter. The feared blisters start to appear on lips. An increased intake of vitamin C (600 mg several times a day) can lead to a marked reduction in pain and a quick healing of the blisters. Direct treatment of the blisters with a mixture of pure ascorbic acid and water also helps. The cold sores disappear much more quickly.

Expert tip No. 3: In the “slow” winter months in particular you should do without fat as much as possible. Your body will thank you in the summer. The light versions of our favourite foods often taste just as good – thanks to gelatine. The natural foodstuff made of high-quality protein is neutral in taste and does not contain any fat, cholesterol or sugar. Extra healthy: 10 g gelatine per day meet the daily requirements of the amino acids glycine and proline - to strengthen the connective tissue and joints.
