Osteoporosis: How Quickly Do You Start Hormone Therapy?

Brussels/Frankfurt am Main, April 29, 2003.
Osteoporosis, a disease where the bones become porous and the risk of fracture increases dramatically. Back pain occurs. In the course of the disease, the body may shrink and, in extreme cases, a hump may be formed. Only in 1994 was osteoporosis recognized worldwide as a disease. Women are particularly prone to osteoporosis as the deficiency of oestrogen that results of the menopause accelerates reduction of bone mass. Hormone therapy can protect against osteoporosis in older people. However, young people can protect themselves too – with the foodstuff gelatine.

Prevention with the help of gelatine – so that you don't become fragile in age

Those who wish to take preventive action in a natural way can do so. The collagenous protein gelatine not only provides valuable nutrients for general health; it helps specifically to keep bones healthy. The amino acids glycine and proline are present in gelatine in much higher concentrations than other proteins. This is a good thing – for these amino acids are particularly important for bone formation. The amino acids along with the gelatine peptides pass through the intestinal wall into the blood stream where they are transported to where they are required – bone tissue. Here they are preferentially absorbed by bone to form a collagenous matrix. In this matrix – it can be visualized as a sort of biological roll of fence wire – calcium and mineral salts are stored. These in turn provide bone with the necessary firmness.

In an osteoporosis study carried out over a period of three years, the effect of gelatine on bone tissue was investigated. This long-term study showed that intake of gelatine reduced fractures in osteoporosis patients considerably. International studies have shown in addition that gelatine has a preventive and regenerative effect on the skeletal and locomotor systems – especially on bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. The effect is also a lasting one. Experts hence recommend the intake of 10 grams of gelatine daily over an extended period of time, especially for young women.
